What is IRMAA?
IRMAA (Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount) is an additional charge added to your Medicare Part B and Part D premiums if your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) exceeds certain thresholds. Social Security determines your IRMAA based on tax returns from two years prior.
2026 IRMAA Thresholds
- • Individual: $109,000 - $137,000
- • Individual: $137,000 - $171,000
- • Individual: $171,000 - $205,000
- • Individual: $205,000 - $500,000
- • Individual: $500,000+
Joint Filing Thresholds
- • Joint: $218,000 - $274,000
- • Joint: $274,000 - $342,000
- • Joint: $342,000 - $410,000
- • Joint: $410,000 - $750,000
- • Joint: $750,000+
How to Appeal IRMAA with Form SSA-44
If you've experienced a life-changing event that significantly reduced your income, you can request a new initial determination using Form SSA-44. Life-changing events include:
- • Death of a spouse
- • Marriage
- • Divorce or annulment
- • Work reduction or stoppage
- • Loss of income-producing property
- • Loss of pension income
- • Employer settlement payment received
Step 1: Obtain Form SSA-44
Download from SSA.gov or request at local office
Step 2: Complete Documentation
Provide proof of life-changing event and income change
Step 3: Submit to Social Security
In person, by mail, or online through my Social Security
Step 4: Await Determination
